2013 Resolutions: Illustrator Sara Blake (ZSO)

				Resolutions. Some things stay the same, but most things change. We invited a small group of previously featured stated artists to reflect on 2012 and share their plans for 2013. Sara Blake (aka “ZSO”) is an American illustrator originally interviewed by stated in April 2011. I guess the only all-encompassing descriptor I can give to 2012 is “year of change.” I think the Mayans may have been on to something—death of one era and beginning of another. My personal life and work life are pretty interwoven, and they are actually fairly impossible for me to separate. I work from a home studio, and all my work is usually hinged upon what’s happening in my personal life, whether it’s based on music I’m listening to, dreams I’m having, new people I’m meeting, or new places I’m experiencing. This year I think I finally came into my own in terms of feeling more independent and sure or what types of projects I’m interested in working on. I’d like to do more personal work on a larger scale, and be more selective about client work. Hopefully this will mean fewer jobs overall, but jobs a little larger in scale and complexity. My 2013 goals include 1) getting my textile company (ZSO-NYC.com) in its second phase with more designs with wholesale orders to reach a wider audience 2) creating a body of work printed large scale on steel for a solo show next summer 3) finishing up a few series that have been ongoing (animals, alphabet, 100 girls, and friend portraits) 4) getting settled into my new studio in the West Village which is now in complete demo-mode (buckets and piles of rubble) and lastly, and potentially most importantly, 5) sleeping more and taking more time off.
